Enugu State Electricity Commission grants 5MW power license to Tempo Energy Ltd
The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has officially granted a 5MW power generation license to Tempo Power Solutions Ltd for a gas-fired power plant, marking a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to enhance its electricity supply. Since assuming regulatory authority from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on October 22, 2024, the EERC has issued a total of 15MW in licenses, making Enugu the first Nigerian state to take full control of its electricity regulation and licensing processes. This shift aims to foster a more localized, responsive, and investor-friendly environment for energy projects within the state.
The latest licensing event took place at the EERC office in Enugu, where Chairman Chijioke Okonkwo emphasized that the licensing reflects increasing confidence from private investors in Enugu’s electricity sector. He highlighted that Tempo Power Solutions leveraged the favorable investment climate in Enugu, engaging an off-taker and completing all necessary application procedures efficiently. Okonkwo described the project as a model of proactive engagement and strategic partnership, expressing confidence that as the local market develops, Tempo Power will expand its capacity and contribute to the state’s energy growth.
Okonkwo credited Governor Peter Mbah’s leadership and the supportive policies outlined in the Enugu State Electricity Policy 2023 and Electricity Law 2023. Since the transfer of regulatory oversight to the EERC, the commission has issued interim licenses, including a 10MW license to Fedikore Limited and a distribution license to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited. The commission has also successfully resolved over 60 customer complaints and is reviewing additional license applications across generation, distribution, and retail segments, demonstrating a proactive approach to market development and customer satisfaction.
The chairman pledged to collaborate with industry providers, policymakers, financiers, and local communities to ensure the delivery of reliable, accessible, and environmentally sustainable power across Enugu. He encouraged investors to explore the state’s abundant energy resources, emphasizing that better infrastructure, security, and social projects laid the foundation for further energy expansion, particularly in underserved regions. This comprehensive strategy aims to position Enugu as a key player in Nigeria’s energy landscape and promote inclusive economic growth.
Tempo Power’s Executive Director, Mr. Collins Kalabare, expressed appreciation for the leadership of Governor Mbah and the efficiency of the EERC’s licensing process. He praised the commission’s professionalism, transparency, and business-oriented approach, noting that the licensing process is seamless and accessible without the need for personal connections. Kalabare reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering consistent power supply, fair tariffs, and value to both residential and commercial customers, with the goal of boosting Enugu’s economic development. He also announced that additional licenses are under review, signaling ongoing progress and upcoming celebrations across the generation, distribution, and retail sectors as the state continues to accelerate its energy sector reforms.
